I have been using/following the lxde project for around a decade now, I grabbed the 20.04 lubuntu to check out how things were since the move to LXQT. And well, I wasn't super impressed. I have always enjoyed the choices available for linux desktop environments, and having older equipment because of budget, I was into both xfce and lxde.
It didn't seem like anyone else was going to try and save the best gtk DE for netbooks and other piece of crap systems, pieces of crap I know I will use again. I am into SBC computing as well.
I've stripped out quite a bit, the remaining pieces of lxde are :
- lxpanel
- lxappearance
- lxhotkey
- lxrandr
- lxsession-logout
- lxinput
- lxterm
- lxpolkit
- pcmanfm
Initial work will be done to make sure that everything is NOT still using GTK2.
Luxe will retain openbox as window manager, plank will be used for a dock (optional ofc), compton will be part of the base system, as will the compton config from lxqt ( not a qt app_.
A lot of times in the past 3 years or so, I have installed xfce over lxde because of whisker-menu, a panel addon with search commands, win key searching has become part of my workflow, and I consider it a must-have. To handle this on luxe, we've pulled in nwgmenu, an opensource GTK menu similar to gnome's search.
LXDE lacks power management, so xfce power manager will be included for now. An integrated power system would def be a goal to work towards. Other inclusions are firefox , geany, a full featured text editor ( think diet atom/sublime/vscode), and the menulibre menu editor.
I'm pretty proficient with git, but I will need to learn launchpad in order to distribute properly. I will bundle the desktop with a minimal ubuntu install as an ISO, tentatively called lunchbox linux. Crunchbang and peppermint are giant inspirations.
